Xanthophyll accumulation in the human retina during supplementation with lutein or zeaxanthin This new publication demonstrates that supplementation with OPTISHARP™ (zeaxanthin) and/or lutein, both formulated as DSM's Actilease™, leads to significant increases of Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) in humans. The results further indicate the possibility that, in comparison with lutein, supplementation with OPTISHARP™ may specifically result in a more wide-spread deposition of macular pigment across the retina. Additionally to age related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease of the center of the retina, this could have implications for reduction of the risk of diseases involving paracentral retinal areas. Two other papers were previously published on this LUXEA Study, which reported that supplementation with OPTISHARP™ and lutein improved visual performance and color vision. - Two studies in Humans confirm crucial role of lutein and OPTISHARP™ (zeaxanthin)
